However I don't understand why the 2 devices have different software versions and do not update to the latest.

I can only guess that this model is not flagged for an update any more, because it is an "old" model. Your radio with the "older" firmware version has simply missed the update. Possibly you (or the original owner, if not you) did not set it check for updates automatically, and did not check manually.
Radios in use: Roberts Stream 93i, Sangean WFR-29C, Technisat 450 & 520, Revo Pixis RX, Hama DIT2010, IR110 & DIR3100.

I understand if they stop providing new firmware versions, but any existing version should be rolled out of an undefined period as long as the service (that is Frontier) still exists.
So having an item stored as replacement and re-activating it 2 years later is not a reason for not receiving any update. What is an update service used for if not for keeping all items up to date, even after maintenance and development phase?
This is a serious question as more and more devices are online updated, like my Epson printer. Trying the "Check for updates.." here and there is a joke if they just close the service on the other site. And even then I would prefer some error message "service not available" instead of "Software is up-to-date".

I could guess that based on the hardware-revision that older radio may stay on some older firmware revision. But I doubt they have that many hardware revisions on those devices. Usually only the software is post-developed after releasing. One could also call that customer-testing, as late landing bugfixes are triggered by customer reported bugs :)

ir-mmi.sgn.ven6-wfr1A-V1.1.7.14611-1A3 (Sangean WFR-1 upgraded)
The WFT-1 is an older radio. It has an older Frontier Silicon Venice 6.0 module (the current one is the 6.5), and I very much doubt if Sangean will provide any more updates for this model.

ir-mmi-FS2026-0500-0093_V2.6.17c4.EX53330-1RC4 (Sangean WFR-27C upgraded)
The Sangean WFR-27, 28 and 29 series are a bit more recent, but still only have v2.6 firmware, which does not support multi-room or the BBC's new DASH streams. Sangean once told me that these will also not be updated any more; at least, not for BBC-DASH. My WFR-29C also still has V2.6.

ir-mmi-FS2026-0500-0284_V2.6.20c7.EX62784-1A20 (Sangean WFT-3 no upgrade)
This is a more recent model, and I am surprised that it also still only has v2.6. It might be worth writing to Sangean and asking if this model will receive any updates.

For BBC DASH streams, a radio needs at least V2.10. Some radios (my Hamas and Roberts, for example) now have V2.11.

The WFR-1 is an older radio. It has an older Frontier Silicon Venice 6.0 module (the current one is the 6.6), and I very much doubt if Sangean will provide any more updates for this model.
I'm actually replacing my two units, as these are the ones that cannot play any AAC streams. My two units were integrated in an home-theater/whole house automation system. They did their duty extremely well, just imagine the convenience of having 10 internet radio presets in any room of the house for the last ten years.
The problem has been to find the best/correct replacement unit, and apparently Sangean may no longer be the best choice.

I've confirmed with Robert's that their Stream 107 is indeed compatible with BBC-DASH, so I'm actually thinking of replacing one of my WFR-27C radios (just purchased) with a Stream 107, apparently they are not the same radios.

(The Sangean WFT-3) is a more recent model, and I am surprised that it also still only has v2.6. It might be worth writing to Sangean and asking if this model will receive any updates.
I indeed contacted Sangean in Holland on September 3, and was informed that their "employee from the technical department was on holiday until September 22", so I'm awaiting an answer this coming week. This radio, although a very nice looking unit like other Sangeans, most likely will be replaced by the Hama DIT2010MBT that is on the way from Spain. The Hama is a lot cheaper and has the latest V2.11 Frontier firmware. It's unacceptable to pay what Sangean asks for a WFT-3 and find out that it's on old firmware forever.

You'll enjoy your Hama with its 30 internet radio presets!

I've confirmed with Robert's that their Stream 107 is indeed compatible with BBC-DASH, so I'm actually thinking of replacing one of my WFR-27C radios (just purchased) with a Stream 107, apparently they are not the same radios.
Roberts have long worked together with Sangean. But they don't just re-brand Sangean models; they put in different features and have different firmware. As a British company, Roberts could not afford to be selling radios which cannot receive BBC. Sangean, on the other hand, don't want to pay Frontier for new firmware for old models. Our Sangean 29C lives in the kitchen and is used mainly by my wife, so it's not a critical problem if it can't do BBC any more one day. Incidentally, Roberts have some new models on the way: the Stream 94i, the Stream 218, and I've heard whispers about a colour-display Revival-type internet radio.

"employee from the technical department was on holiday until September 22", so I'm awaiting an answer this coming week.
Do let us know what he says!

Last September 26, I again contacted Sangean in Holand, but unfortunately they never got back to me, so they are definitely not making their current radios compatible with BBC DASH streams, anyway my units were successfully returned for a full refund.

I'll take this opportunity to provide the updated firmware for my Roberts Stream 107:
ir-mmi-FS2026-0500-0144_V2.10.13c.EX67611-1RC7

The radio came with this older firmware:
-1A7_ir-mmi-FS2026-0500-0144_V2.6.17c4.EX53330-1A7
(the "-1A7" was indeed repeated at the beginning of the string, must have been a mistake)
