I am using a Stream93i accessing the Frontier Silicon Radio Portal.
The Frontier Silicon Radio Portal provides a facility to add a new Radio Station by quoting its URL, but no similar facility for adding a new Podcast.
How can I add the Podcast?

You can search for a podcast by name on the Frontier Silicon Radio Portal by clicking the Podcast button under the search box, and add a podcast to your favourites in the same way as a normal radio station. You then call up the podcast from Favourites on your radio.

Yo can also search for a podcast directly on your radio. Having found one, you can store it to a preset (this is where a radio with a decent number of presets - like Roberts Radios radios - comes in useful!).

If your desired preset is not found on Frontier's list, you can, as far as I know, just add it as an 'added station'.
Radios in use: Roberts Stream 93i, Sangean WFR-29C, Technisat 450 & 520, Revo Pixis RX, Hama DIT2010 & DIR3100.

Hi Dogmatix
Many thanks for your response.
The Podcast I am trying to add as a preset on my 93i is the VOA International Edition.
Searching on the Frontier Silicon Radio Portal brings it up immediately and the episodes play fine in the portal.  Additionly, I can add the Podcast to My Favourites and can then easily access it on my 93i.

Similarly if I search Podcasts on my 93i, and enter VOA and then click the first VOA displayed, the International Edition Podcast appears in the list.

Problems arise, however, when I try to play any episode of the Podcast on my 93i. Firstly, my 93i will not connect, and secondly when I try to go back and select a different episode my 93i crashes!

iTunes on my Windows 10 Laptop has no problem finding and playing the Podcast. Additionly, iTunes allows me to copy the Podcast's URL which turns out to be https://www.voanews.com/podcast/?count=50&zoneId=1451

I would be very grateful if you would try to find and play an episode of this Podcast on your 93i. This would determine if I have a problem with my 93i or wether there's a problem with the URL.

Many thanks
Malcolm

Do Frontier Silicon radios have the same inability to play encrypted podcasts as Reciva radios?  I have no idea, because I don't own a Frontier Silicon radio.  But I suspect that what's going on here is referenced in this thread:  http://iradioforum.net/forum/index.php?topic=2403.0

I have just tried on a different Frontier radio (a Hama DIR3500) as my 93i is at home and I'm not. I find that it will not play any VoA podcast; it just says "Connecting.... Re-connecting....". However, backing up and selecting a different podcast does not cause it to crash.

There is clearly something about either the URL or the streaming format that FS internet radios do not like. Solo, can the Grace Mondo Plus make anything of these particular podcasts?

Some stations do not want listeners to listen using internet radios; they want them to listen on devices like smartphones which can show adverts. I don't know if this is the case with VoA. But you might ask whay then are the podcasts listed on Frontier Silicon's portal and devices? Possibly because the database they use is vtuner, and other devices (like smartphones with the right app) also use that database. But Frontier really ought to filter out unusable content.

Perhaps it might be informative to write to Roberts about this - they do take customer support seriously, and might be able and willing to investigate further. If you do, please let us know what comes out of it!

I'll try it when I get home and report back . . . . .

Ok, yes.  Those podcasts do play successfully on the Mondo Plus.  I'm fairly convinced now that neither Reciva radios nor this particular Frontier Silicon radio can play podcasts with an https: url.

I think it is has been known for a long time that Reciva based radios cannot handle https.

And now perhaps we can add to that hoary knowledge this information that Frontier Silicon radios can't handle https either.

So, that leaves two courses of action here:

1. Contact Roberts and ask them to lean on Frontier to solve the problem of https streams generally

2. Contact VoA and let them know that by using https, they are cutting off lots and lots of Recive and Frontier users (why does a podcast need https anyway?)

FYI I contacted Tech Support at Roberts. They replied :-
" Thank you for your enquiry. It appears that the format in which the podcast is hosted on, is not compatible with the Stream 93i. I’m afraid that there is no action we can take on our end to rectify this."
