Thinking about a Grace Mondo...
« on: 17:58:28 | 21 September, 2014 »
...but it looks like these type of devices are dying like flies. Why is that?

I want a self contained unit to act as a clock radio alarm. With a device like the Mondo, I can listen to Pandora, switch to the ball game, back to Pandora and have it wake me up in the morning. I haven't found any app, or combination of apps, that can accomplish this without far too much interaction for a nightstand device.

So, is it wise to buy in on one of these at this stage of the game, or is there a better solution I haven't thought of? Last thing I want to do is invest in a technology thats all but gone in a year. I've done far too much of that in the past...

Appreciate any input you might be inclined to leave

Thanks,
Sean

Who knows. At least you'll have a nice alarm clock and night light.

Whats your best guess though? Think they'll be viable for a few years anyhow? I know the squeezebox has been out of production for a while now, but as far as I can tell they're still working fine...

I can't understand it. Why isn't everyone listening to internet audio via internet radio?

Oh well.

We'll be okay so long as the Reciva database exists. If at some point CSR/Reciva decides that's it, then we're screwed.

Hopefully before that moment they may choose to release the database and firmware, then it's up to us.

I think we'll be okay for a bit longer (he said confidently ...).

I think you'll still be able to get some good use out of a Mondo.  There's no sign that the former Reciva is disappearing immediately and if it does, the radios still should have some functionality (but no "my stuff," etc.).  My guess is that Grace has too much stake in the the database to allow the servers to be unplugged.  Whether we see any more firmware updates or the rumored Spotify Connect integration is more doubtful.

Screw it. It's on the way.

I'm a bit of a techie / hacker so we'll see if this turns out to be another obsession...
